Sign me up!

I caught the end of the U.S. Half-Marathon today down by Aquatic Park here in San Francisco. Milling about the finish line and listening to the race emcee call out the names of the runners as they crossed the line seemed to jump-start my competitive juices. It's been four months since Western Australia; I think it's time I sign myself up for a race.

The next eight weeks are going to be busy -- Kristine and I are going to a pair of weddings and each of them are several time-zones away. The first weekend in June's already earmarked for the Sequoia Double-Metric. That leaves just a few weekends in May. Fortunately, May's a popular month for local triathlons and as luck would have it, both Wildflower (May 1) and Auburn (May 22) still have space available!

I'm going to take a day or two to decide whether or not I think I can be ready to race in three weeks. I haven't been swimming much, and Wildflower's the weekend after the first of the two weddings... but it might be fun to just go down there and see what's what as far as my fitness is concerned.

Training Update

Speaking of fitness, I just wrapped up three hard weeks of training - my first truly well-executed training block in the lead up to late July's Vineman 140.6. Let's break 'em down:
  • 21 days. 17 days on, 4 days off.
  • 8 high-intensity interval workouts on the bike.
  • 4 light swim workouts of about 35 minutes each.
  • 5 actual bike rides, including long rides of 65, 75 and 100 miles.
  • 4.6 runs per week, averaging roughly 6 miles per run. Long of 9 miles.
  • 30 miles per week running at roughly 8:20 minutes per mile.
The runs have been especially encouraging, but my legs definitely started to break down during the third week. My hip flexors have been horrendously tight; I need to find a way to open them up without straining or tearing anything. Either way, I'm going to take it easy for a few days and then get back to it.

Wrapper Update

In two weeks, I have collected over 100 wrappers from family and friends, bringing me close to 10% of my goal. Only about twelve weeks remain, so if you're snacking on granola bars, stash those wrappers away for me!
